Degale wins to lift Team GB by Ian McNeilly Aug 16th 2008

Middleweight James Degale lifted the gloom which must have descended on Team GB by outclassing American Shawn Estrada in their round of 16 match by 11-5. A cagey opener wasn't complete bereft of action yet ended 0-0. Two left hands put Degale 2-0 in front and then the pair exchanged blows to score simultaneously, making the tally 3-1 at the end of the second round. Estrada looked like a plodder by the third and Degale got on his toes, edging ahead 6-3 which looked a comfortable enough margin to progress. Degale showed his class in the last, easing to 8-4 and then impressively racked up a few scoring shots in as many seconds, turning 8-4 into 11-5. The Hammersmith man is now only one win away from a guaranteed medal.
