Bradley Saunders was in no mood for a long workout this afternoon. In his round of 32 match at 64kg this afternoon, he made short work of Ghana's Samuel Kotey Neequaye, stopping him with a left hook to the body in the opening round.
Saunders, now cited as being from Stockton-on-Tees rather than nearby Sedgefield, started by smacking Neequaye cleanly in the face twice but, worryingly, neither punch counted. To make matters worse, Neequaye found himself 2-0 up rather quickly, much to the delight of the Chinese crowd who seem insistent on supporting the opposition of, at the very least, boxers from Great Britain and the United States.
A left to the body put Neequaye down. He rose, took a standing eight and Saunders renewed his assault. Another, even better left hook to the body had Neequaye writhing on the canvas. He failed to beat the count. Time of stoppage - 1:24.
Neequaye gestured as if the blow was low and dithering from made it unclear as to what was happening initially. It was a perfect left hook - and the Ghanaian returned to the canvas after rising for medical treatment.
Saunders made it three out of three for Team GB and the feelgood factor amongst the lads must be high.
The County Durham man now goes on to face Frenchman Alexis Vastine in the round of 16 on Thursday. Vastine beat Lithuania's Egidijus Kavaliauskas 13-2.
